    Early Life and Background

Balbeer Singh was born on 2 February 1962 in the small village of Sichewal in Jalandhar district, Punjab. As of April 2026, Seechewa is 64 years old. His family belonged to the Sikh farming community, and he grew up in a simple household where values of hard work and service were deeply respected. His father, Chanan Singh, and mother, Chanan Kaur, played an important role in shaping his early life.

Growing up in rural Punjab, he witnessed both the beauty of nature and the challenges of pollution. Balbeer Seechewa belongs to the Nirmala Sikh tradition, which emphasizes purity, service, and devotion.

    Physical Appearance

Balbeer Singh is known for his simple lifestyle. He stands at 5 feet 5 inches (165 cm) tall. With black eyes and black hair, his appearance reflects humility rather than grandeur. Unlike many public figures, he does not focus on material possessions or luxury.

His personal traits are equally inspiring. He is known for his calm nature, patience, and ability to connect with people from all walks of life. Villagers often describe him as approachable and kind-hearted. His simplicity in dress and speech makes him relatable, and his actions speak louder than words.

    Education and Spiritual Journey

Balbeer Singh pursued higher education at DAV College, Nakodar, where he studied Economics, Political Science, and Punjabi. His academic background gave him a strong understanding of social and political issues, which later helped him in his campaigns. But his journey was not limited to classrooms.

In 1981, he joined Shri Nirmal Kutiya, a spiritual institution. Under the guidance of Sant Avtar Singh, he learned the values of service, humility, and devotion. In 1988, after the passing of Sant Avtar Singh, Balbeer Singh became the head of Nirmal Kutiya.

    Environmental Campaigns: Revival of Rivers

One of the most remarkable contributions of Balbeer Singh Seechewa has been his work in cleaning and reviving rivers. His most famous campaign was the restoration of the Kali Bein rivulet, a 160-kilometre-long river in Punjab. This river holds deep spiritual importance because Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, is believed to have received enlightenment on its banks.

In 2024, he turned his attention to the Buddha Nullah, a polluted stream in Ludhiana that flows into the Sutlej River. Seechewa’s team collaborated with farmers and the Punjab Pollution Control Board to remove pollutants and restore the stream. Another important campaign was the Kanjli Wetland restoration in 2018.

    The Seechewal Model of Development

In 1999, Balbeer Singh introduced what is now known as the Seechewal Model of Development. This model is based on the idea that villages can solve their own problems through collective effort.

The model quickly spread to other villages. Today, more than 250 villages in Punjab have adopted it. The success of this model also reached beyond Punjab. In fact, it was extended to 1,657 villages along the Ganga River, where communities used Seechewa’s methods to clean and restore their surroundings.

    Political Career

Balbeer Singh Seechewa’s influence is not limited to social and environmental work. In July 2022, he entered politics as a Member of Rajya Sabha from Punjab, representing the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). His entry into politics was seen as a natural extension of his service, as he wanted to bring environmental issues to the national stage.

His presence in the Rajya Sabha gave voice to rural communities and environmental concerns that often go unheard. He focused on policies related to water conservation, pollution control, and sustainable development. By April 2026, he became the only remaining AAP Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab, after several members left the party.
